Circa 1891
In 1890 the government built a new post and telegraph office replacing the original building built in 1842. In 1970 a new smaller modern post office, now the Cat Clinic was built further along New Town Road. The grand old 1891 building has since housed a variety of businesses including a boot maker’s shop, The Savings Bank of Tasmania, The Hospitality Association of Tasmania, IPM Workplace Safety, a number of health professionals, a gift shop, an art gallery and a café.
The rear brick building was constructed in 1923 as a sorting room for the post office. It was also home at one stage to all of the Australia Post bicycles. This beautiful, large light filled space was for a number of years a training room and is now a studio space.
